Cyclic alpha-MSH analogue that stimulates UV-independent tanning via melanocyte activation.
Binds to MC1R and MC4R melanocortin receptors. MC1R activation stimulates melanocytes to produce eumelanin (brown/black pigment), creating a tan without UV exposure. MC4R activation is associated with sexual arousal and appetite suppression.
Produces tanning without UV exposure. Side effects in research include facial flushing, nausea, and spontaneous erections (via MC4R activation). Not to be confused with Melanotan I, which is MC1R-selective.
The tan produced by MT-2 is similar to a natural UV tan — it increases eumelanin production, which is the same mechanism activated by sun exposure. The tan typically develops over 1–2 weeks of loading.
